About | In 1854 Phillip Joshua Le Cornu left Jersey, Channel Islands, and migrated to S. A. in the sailing ship "Evening Star". A cabinet maker by trade, he founded a furniture and bedding factory, and later became an undertaker. 96 years and 5 generations later, Lance Le Cornu bought into the business, and began selling direct to the public. A rapid era of growth began, with each expansion proving too small, so in 1967 Clarke Street was purchased from Adelaide City Council (the first public street to be sold by the Council since the Colony was founded! ) and the North Adelaide store became, in 1968, the largest furniture store in Australia. Within 2 years, demand again proved this site to be too small. The original 9-acre Chrysler car assembly plant at Keswick was then purchased, and converted into the worlds largest full-or-self-service furniture Warehouse and air-conditioned Showroom, complete with a Restaurant, a creche for child-minding with a unique "sea" of over 50, 000 coloured plastic balls imported from Denmark, and 200 fully decorated room-size furniture displays. Meanwhile, back in 1966 the firm opened another store in Darwin. During Cyclone Tracy this store, and its stock, vanished. It re-opened in McMinn Street and later gained the contract to furnish the mining town of Jabiru in the Territory. During 1988 the Keswick site was once more redeveloped. A further 60, 000 sq. ft was added to the display area. Another Bulkstore (twice as big as the old North Adelaide store) was bought at Mile End, and the North Adelaide store moved, lock stock and barrel, to Keswick in a consolidation now totaling 17 acres. |
