About | The company Holmfjord is established in an fish-processing plant with an associated landing stage in the nothernmost parts of Norway. Know how, capital and hard work has transformed the buildings into a modern recirculating facility for feeding/ongrowing of sea urcins. Holmfjord was founded in the spring 2001. Sea urchins in Norwegian waters The northernmost parts of Norway are heavily populated with sea urchins. The condition has lasted for approximately 30 years, and the reduction in macro algae caused by this invasion has been estimated to be larger than 50%. Potentially, this large amount of sea urchins constitutes a valuable resource, as their roe is a well paid product on the world market. In addition, the Norwegian population is probably one of the last large unexploited occurrences. However, the high population density has the drawback that the sea urchins have depleted their own feed resources, with the result that they contain very little roe. In large areas roe content is 5 % of body weight or less, while it should be between 15 and 20 %. The positive news is that there has been a break trough in the manufacturing of a highly efficient feed that result in a optimum roe content after approximately 8 weeks of feeding. The feed is gelatinous and can lie in water for several days without dissolving. The resultant roe has received good critics when tested by Japanese experts. A feeding regime based on six weeks of formulated feed and two weeks with natural macro algae, will probably result in a roe even closer to the natural variant. Whelk constitute a substantial by catch in the sea urchin fishery. |
