About | Design Asia is a small-scale enterprise devoted to the promotion of hand loom products mainly textiles and ready-made garments for women, men and children - that use pure, natural fabrics of cotton, silk and linen,hand-crafted by highly-skilled artisans. Started in 2004 in the eastern metropolis of Kolkata (Calcutta), India, the initial focus was on garments for women, with the textiles sourced from various renowned craft centers in India . In the intervening period, the product range has broadened to include ready-made garments for men and children, and also been extended to other textile products in areas such as home and clothing accessories. The styles are eclectic, mixing traditional with new original designs that emphasize the art of hand loom weavers through their patterns, textures, and colors. DesignAsia has its small worskop in the Salt Lake Basundhara area of Eastern Kolkata, but its registered sales outlet has moved from its first home in Swabhumi the Heritage plaza, to a recent opening in the Central-South Bhowanipore area of the city close to the Forum Mall on Lee Road (between Elgin Road and A.J.C. Bose Road), in a lane leading from next to the Reid & Taylor's showroom on Lee Road The intention is to create products that are affordable, durable and high in quality, and that can be worn and used comfortably in a wide variety of cultural settings and occasions. The items are destined for both domestic and foreign markets, matching current lifestyles and demands while retaining their universal appeal over time. There is no attempt to follow the dictates of global fashion centers and advertising. In the area of garments, therefore, the influences are both Asian and Western, ranging from kurtas and tops of varying length to skirts and wrap-a rounds, pants and churidars , shirts, pants, sherwanis and jackets, saris and stoles, dresses and salwar-suits. The textile product range is gradually expanding to hand-painted and batik decorations, shawls, bags, home furnishings and wall-hangings. As resources permit, the planned next stage is to improve Design Asia's direct outreach to the weavers, working with them to improve the consistency and quality of their products, and helping to revive traditions and skills that are being lost through mass-production, synthetics and the pressures of export-led designs and styles. The main purpose of this web-site is to inform and update our viewers on the range of styles and products available through Design Asia. News on artisan backgrounds and promotional work will be supplied. If there is interest in procuring any of the items displayed, contact numbers and addresses are provided. Specific references are given through the relevant product numbers, prices and size/color selections. Shipping and payment modalities are discussed in the last section.
