| About | I have done bulk handling systems in carbon black as a specialty for almost 40 years, beginning as a project manager at thomas conveyor, systems division to being president of meyer systems corporation in Houston. I did the first of the michelin systems when they came to south carolina in 1972 and since that time, I have done major projects for most every major tire manufacturer in the world as well as many other rubber and plastics products companies. Ultimately, I formed ted key company based on two patents issued to me, one for a heated screw feeder and one for the first successful flexible weighing hopper in the u. S. Both of these units are now considered the standard in the industry. I sold my business some 6 years ago and since that time I have been serving as a consultant for companies either producing or consuming carbon black. I have worked with one of the major producers for almost 6 years in their plants and the plants of their customer in the u. S. Europe and Australia. I have worked to assist the design of handling systems for them for new plants in the far east. Essentially, I have performed system audits, systems and component design, fabrication and testing of equipment prototypes addressing specific handling problems and assisted the plants in resolving their problems internally. A couple of unique developements from this effort are: A screener which is located below their bulk storage silos which fill the rail cars. This screener will remove the lumps and chunks from the material as it flows into the railcar. Uniquely, the unit is self-cleaning and requires only a small amount of plant air to operate the screen. The result of this screener being installed reduced the car loading time from well over 4 hours to less than one hour. A portable pan which can slide under a rail car or trailer, rise up to engage the bottom port and vacuum the heals form the car during cleaning or during transfer to storage. This unit makes the connection quick and easy while eliminating the vast majority of spillage opportunity during these operations.
